Clinton Devon Estates takes on the Nello Cycle Challenge 2017

FORCE (Friends of the Oncology and Radiotherapy Centre Exeter), a local cancer charity based at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital, organise the annual bike ride which attracts over 1500 people nationwide. The physical challenge appeals to some but for many the stunning scenery is enough of an incentive to take on the 55-100 mile routes.

The challenge began in the year 2000 in memory of Topsham resident and cycling enthusiast Nello Ghezzo who lost his life to cancer. The chosen route was one of Nello’s favourites, offering challenging hills, exciting downhill sections and stunning scenery.

The challenge is not a race, but in the absence of competition there is an overriding determination to raise as much money as possible for the charity. Participants and their donors have raised an incredible £80,000 for FORCE since the race began. FORCE strive to improve patient care by assisting in the purchase of advanced equipment and funding for vital research at the University of Exeter Medical School.

Last year, the team at Clinton Devon Estates successfully completed the course and raised over £4000. Once again, the team are keen to conquer both the 100 and 55 mile circuits.

John Varley, Estates Director said: “We are incredibly proud of what we achieved last year and, although The Nello is a gruelling physical challenge, it is one that the team and I are determined to complete once again.

“FORCE is a fantastic charity to fundraise on behalf of. The services which they provide are a blessing for those in our community whom are battling cancer and truly make a difference in the lives of so many.”

The team at Clinton Devon Estates are accomplished fundraisers, having raised thousands of pounds for the local community over the years. Last year, Bicton Arena hosted a special fundraising evening on behalf of The Eventing Family and amassed over £40,000 for multiple charities. In 2013, they took on the gruelling Commando Challenge raising over £3000 for Devon Air Ambulance and C Group.

The Nello Century Cycle Challenge begins 8am at the Topsham Rugby Ground on Sunday 25th June 2017.
